This week CJ and Maggie started soccer and dance. Maggie is doing both, I think dance will win because as she says it is in the air conditioning. CJ is doing really well, especially on defense. Chris and I are not enjoying 3rd grade homework!!!

The kids went back to school this week - 1st and 3rd grade!! CJ managed to get called to the office before school even started - he went to visit a teacher in a totally different part of the school so he was lost and the teacher panicked and had his name announced over the intercom. Chris and I were mortified, but CJ was quite pleased with himself. While we said a little prayer for his teacher, Maggie's teacher said she was wonderful - go figure. CJ had tests the first week and made A+ on all of them, which he told me in his most "I'm bored" tone. Both kids are playing soccer and Maggie is also dancing.

High school rugby is starting early this year - I am thrilled...lol

When did kids stop being kids? And when in the world did parents stop being parents? Parenting is not about being your kid’s best friend. It’s about teaching them what is appropriate and what is not.

In fact, I remember one particularly embarrassing time that my mom insisted on “doing the right thing” and you know what? Looking back, she was right. It was my school Halloween party and all of my friends decided our theme was Disney characters. I decided to go with Jasmine from “Aladdin,” and my costume was pink, my favorite color.

Now if you have ever seen the movie you know that Jasmine has a bare midriff , but see, I was in 9th grade and all of about 15 years old at the time and there was no way on God’s green earth that my mother was letting me out of the house with my midriff showing. She took me to the local dance store, bought a skin colored leotard and made me wear it under the costume. I am pretty sure I wasn’t thrilled with her that night, and I was ridiculously hot in the school cafeteria, but you know what? I was 15 years old –- a child. She was right: it would have been inappropriate to wear the costume as is.

All of that drama -– and trust me, at the time it was major drama — over a bare midriff. It makes me wonder, what in the world Miley Cyrus’s mother was thinking letting her daughter get on stage at the Teen Choice Awards in booty shorts and high-heeled boots and dance around a pole? I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised; this is, after all, the girl who last year posed on the cover of Vanity Fair in nothing more than a sheet. But my point in sharing the above story is this: a parent’s job is to teach.

When you are 14 to 17, you are too young to know what the right thing is to do in certain situations. That is why your parents are there to guide you. You may not like what they have to say – and parents, you may not like saying it, but it needs to be done. Miley is still a CHILD. A 16 year old girl should not be writhing around on a stage in booty shorts on a pole in front of other teens at an award show.

What kind of an example does it set for other kids? And by her parents condoning it, what kind of example are they setting for other parents?

Some Sad News - Barton Edward Hinson (6/30/92 - 5/31/09)

According to the Kershaw County Coroner's office, 16-year-old Barton Hinson was killed when the SUV he was driving struck a tree on Tower Road.
That's near the Kershaw County/Richland County line.
According to the Highway Patrol, Hinson, along with a 17-year-old passenger, were wearing seatbelts.
The passenger was transported to Camden Hospital for her injuries.

Another one...but this one is more special to Chris and I. Bart's parents own the horse farm that I kept my horses at and his mom was my trainer for years. Bart was born the month I graduated from high school and when I returned home after college I baby sat him and his two year old sister until they were too old for a babysitter. Chris and I literally cut our teeth on parenting with this kid and have lots of pictures with Santa and slip-n-slides, etc. We lived on the farm for 6 months while our current house was being built and spent many afternoons watching him practice kicking field goals (he played for LE).
As he got older Bart spent many football seasons with his family, my youngest brother and Chris at Panther games. Needless to say my family and his have interacted regularly for as long as I can remember...they are, of course, devastated. There has never been a teenager that I have met that had more promise and potential than Bart.

As I have said our wonderful neighbors are moving back to Ohio in July. They are storing their boat at our house so a couple of weeks ago we went out with them - the kids were thrilled! Now I am a chlorine kid of girl so I played with the baby while CJ and Maggie went swimming. Thanks Devin & Michele - we had a great time!!

I thought about trying to catch up from like the end of March but I have given up - so I have added some pictures of what we have been up to. I am addicted to Facebook, what can I say.

The kids are great and looking forward to the end of school. Actually so am I, at least until about 2 weeks into June, then I count down the days till they go back. My parents have them all day during the summer so they probably start counting down about two days after they get out.

Rugby is over until November. I would be remiss if I did not say that we lost one of our players on March 26. Alex Fowler was killed in a car accident on his way to school. Chris and I were devastated - Alex was a stand out among the team and this is the second time my wonderful husband has had to get this team through a death of a friend, if you have been following this blog, you know Tyler Narr died in August.

Our GREAT neighbors Devin and Michele are moving back to Ohio in July. We are so sad - they sold their house in 3 weeks and will be in temporary housing until the summer so we get to see them for a little while longer.

AND last but not least I had another kidney stone at the end of March - that makes three since January. I love excelling at everything!

On Saturday Mom treated Maggie and I to the Lipizzaner Stallion Show at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia. We enjoyed it and it certainly fueled Maggie's "I need a horse" request. Of course my camera batteries died so the only picture I got was a blurry one! So I improvised with the Internet.

Monday night into Tuesday morning it snowed. It is such a rare thing the whole neighborhood was outside taking pictures and I was no exception. CJ spent about 2 minutes outside, said it was cold and has not re-emerged since.

Chris and my brother, Jeff attended the Panthers game on Saturday and, if any of you watched it on TV, it was worse in person. I sent him a text after the 3rd interception and said get in the car and come home....but they stayed until the bitter end. Oh well......they had a great season......maybe next year.

Christmas Take 2

We celebrated the Knotts Family Christmas over New Year's! The kids thought it was great and it was good to see the family. USC and Clemson lost their bowl games - since both teams lost it somehow makes it better for fans on both sides.

Rugby season starts this month - so our Friday nights are booked until April - yes April!

Sorry I have been behind - with school plays and church programs, parades, office parites and Christmas festivities I was beginnning to wonder if this really was the "most ownderful time of the year." Everyday before Chris left for work he would ask "what are we doing tonight?" The kids really enjoyed Christmas and as we sit around today watching football - they are gearing up for the Knotts Christmas starting Wednesday.

We spent Thanksgiving with The Smith Family in Huntersville, NC. It took about 20 tries to get the family picture - the kids were not amused. We put up the Christmas tree the Sunday after, which is a record for me since I usually wait until December 20th. We are gearing up for a busy next couple of weeks with The Jingle Ball 5k Run/Walk (Mom and I are doing this - guess which one we are doing), school plays, church plays and breakfast with Santa. I was at the kids school today and got to read CJ's Christmas list - which contained things I have never heard him ask for...uh oh!!

We attended the wedding of my cousin on Saturday - Greg and Karen were married on a boat during a cruise on Lake Norman. The weather held out and although it was windy there was no rain! The kids loved it and were pretty well behaved considering the added excitement of the boat and water and twelve other kids running around. Sorry for the insane length of the slide show - but I have to say I agree with my aunt who said she was not having her picture taken because they never turned out as beautiful as she was - I TOTALLY agree - mine never turn out as thin as I actually am......lol

Before we left for the wedding Maggie went to Build a Bear for a birthday party and Chris and I took CJ and Mason (our neighbor) to Family Fun Day in Camden - see http://www.sullivan-spradley.memory-of.com/About.aspx. The kids had a great time getting their face painted and climbing all over the fire truck. I am happy the weather also held out for the Spradley Family.

The kids were out of school Monday and Tuesday - so Chris and I took turns, he had Monday and I had Tuesday. On Monday all Chris had to do was clean the house, do all the dishes and the laundry. On Tuesday we left the house at 8:30 and got home around 2. I packed a dentist appointment,doctors appointment, lunch with Dad and voting in on Tuesday. Chris had a line at 7am but I hardly had to wait in line at 1:30pm. Not sure who got the better deal!!!

Reflection - I attended a wedding this past weekend of a co-worker. The ceremony was outdoors and as I watched the groomsman pause and smile and ascend the stairs it gave me a chance to reflect upon the various roles men have to take on and get very little credit for. No doubt these young men were thinking "This sucks - where is the beer?" However they did exactly what they were told, just as my husbands friends did 13 years ago. I have known the guys in this picture since they were freshman at The Citadel and have had the pleasure of watching them mature from boys to men to husbands and fathers (some of you - still waiting E). Of course I can only speak of my husband, but my guess is that they are pretty much the same way. By now we have lived some of the vows you take on your wedding day - for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, forsaking all others.... When we had children I was the one that stayed home, and for 7 years he had no choice but to go to work, whether he hated it or not. I drive the nicer of our two cars, Chris lets me take a nap every weekend, he always answers the "does this make me look fat" question correctly, he navigates PMS like a pro and never complains that I have two pair of the same shoe. I hope that we raise our son to follow in his father's and "uncles" footsteps and our daughter to find someone with these traits and appreciate the various roles that men have to take on (and remember to give them credit for it).

Happy birthday to my mother, who turns ?? today!!!

Nothing much has been happening - CJ is back in soccer season and this year we seem to have a lot more games than last season. He scored his first GOAL today and we are very proud of him - now if he could just learn to not yell at the other team when they score....we are trying to teach him that is their job.....also he is coming off a team that (last year) was really good, to a tougher age group...he is not taking the losing thing too well :-)

Also Chris and CJ went to a Panthers game last Sunday with my brother Jeff - Chris said CJ was in awe and then thought it was too loud!!! If you know CJ I know that you are in shock!

Current Events

I added a slide show of things we have been up to the past couple of weeks. After Tyler's funeral (see August 23 post) Chris and I invited the rugby players and their parents back to our house to hang out. A game started in the front yard and of course I had to take pictures of the little darlings - and yes those children are all of 16.

We fed Tana's horses over Labor Day weekend much to mine and Maggie's delight - the snake is what greeted me on Sunday morning - Chris arrived to capture it and relocate him - my hero!

Finally soccer has started back up and Maggie attended the little demon cheer clinic for the second year in a row. She will be cheering at the football game Friday night much to her delight and CJ's dismay!

This is just a random post that I am doing because I am a little bored at work. Now that my life of leisure is over, after seven years, I have returned to working outside of the home - in downtown Columbia. Every day at 9, 12 and 5 the sound of a Rooster crowing and the Carolina fight song is blasted out of speakers at the top of the Columbia skyline. You really should have seen the rush of people leaving work at noon last Thursday to tailgate before the NC State game - all for a team that, quite frankly, has done nothing with much success but populate 5 Points and the local jail. Oh the presumable star quarterback, in very mature fashion, keyed a professor's car with some success, til he got caught.

Now I am confident that I have made some reading this blog mad, but I will point out 1. My degree, technically, is from USC and 2. this is my blog so I can say what I want - Go Cocks! Good luck against Georgia (you are going to need it)

Authorities say 16-year-old Tyler Austin Narr of Lugoff was swimming near
Dreher Island with friends when he disappeared under water.
Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster says friends tried to find the boy, but were unsuccessful.
Narr was found late this afternoon by officials.

Chris coached Tyler in rugby - his friends called him "Shaggy" because he resembled the character in Scooby-Doo.

Back to School!!!!!

Maggie started kindergarten today and CJ is now in second grade. What a difference!! Chris and I both went into work late so we could do the usual walking to class, picture taking first day of school routine - the kindergarten class was a little chaotic with parents everywhere - CJ's class were all sitting quietly doing their morning work as if they had not even had a summer. We took Maggie into her class and made a fuss while CJ announced that he was going ahead to his class because he did not want to be late (he gets that from his father). After saying goodbye to Maggie we headed to CJ's class, as referenced earlier, they were all sitting quietly until I came walking in and said how well behaved they were and started taking pictures of him.....his teacher seemed unamused.....and the kids looked at me like I was crazy....oh well. CJ is seated with 2 girls and another boy from his class last year. Chris and I are taking bets as to how long that will last.

Mini Vacation

We have moved on from lots of little gifts to one big gift, this year, a Nintendo DS, but he would still like a real light saber for Christmas.

WOW! I sure am behind. Apparently we do not lead very eventful lives. The kids enjoyed the fireworks on the 4th. It has been amusing to watch them go from being scared to wanting them to be louder.

The kids left Thursday for Tenessee to stay with Nana and Papa for a week!!!! Chris and I went to the beach with our friends David and Nicole over the weekend and have spent the rest of our free time going out to eat and purging their toys!!! I am sure they will not miss a thing.

The end of the week brings CJ's 8th birthday - he wants to go to Chucky Cheese in Greenville AND Columbia!!! Great.

Andrew Jacob made his debut Sunday June 22. Michele did great and Devin, although he says he was frantic, seemed very together. Andrew wasted no time - they arrived in their hospital room at 2:45 p.m. and he arrived around 3:15 p.m. Now that is the way to have a baby! Congratulations guys!!! We cannot wait to babysit.

Today our preachers wife had her children and my children at a park and they ran into one of my friends from high school who now lives out of state. Andrea was here for two days visiting her ailing grandmother and just had a new baby girl 3 weeks ago! I was able to visit with her on my way to girls night out. It was good to see her and her family (its been 2 years)! Girls night out was a good time, we really need to do it more often.

This week saw the end of bible school and Devin & Michele's (our neighbors) baby shower. The kids had a great time at both. Although they have both started asking how that baby got in there? We love Devin and Michele and I sold them the house across the street - so I take full credit! They had some friends come from out of town for the party "shower" which lasted well into the night. I LOVE people from Ohio!

Anyway - Ken (who has got to be the funniest man alive) races dirt track cars and of course CJ had to see the race car. Hope everyone had a nice Memorial Day. We did absolutly nothing, well I did nothing. Chris cut the grass - I watched. CJ had school, but I picked him up at 12, much to his dismay, since they were going to play army at recess. Once I convinced him that the boys next door were home, he was more then happy to leave. It was ridiculous - the teacher had 6 out of 19 kids there today! I set up my first slide show, but can't figure out how to make it all one post. Oh well, I'm working on it!

Here are some pictures from end of year school parties. Maggie "graduated" from preschool and CJ made it through first grade with MUCH improved behavior and straight A's. I will spare you my opinion on having to have a "ceremony" every time a child does something that should be expected - of course we took off work, showed up with flowers and cameras, etc., what can I say?

I stuck this right between mother and father's day. If you know me at all you know that I have had a life long passion for horses. It seems that I have (not on purpose of course) passed this on to my daughter. The first picture was taken when I was about 14, jumping 5ft, on the back of a $10,000.00+ animal. Now for all you horse people, remember I was 14 - so disregard my hair not tucked under my hat and the apparent bathing suit top I am wearing, but check out that form! Anyway now that I have children of my own I do not know what my parents were thinking!!!! Thanks Mom and Dad - that was/is one of the best experiences of my life.

After much unwanted pressure, we (I) decided we should have a blog, so all of our friends can read about our life everyday (cause you know you want to be just like us :-)

We spent this past weekend in Greenville with the in-laws! It was a much needed distraction and the kids loved playing with their cousins. Saturday morning we watched Kellie's (Chris's sister) kids play soccer and ate at Skins (best hot dogs in the world, so they say). Saturday evening the best mother and father in-law in the world watched all of the grandkids so Chris and I could take Kellie out. Let me just say, I have the best husband in the world, because I had a little too much to drink and actually had to go out on the terrace of California Dreaming to get some freah air and remind myself that drinking a martini, a glass of wine and champagne in 20 minutes may not have been such a good idea. He just sat with me and laughed. Once I composed myself Chris thought it would be great to take us to see Ironman - half way through I developed a headache - but the movie was pretty good. These are just random pictures from the weekend, Chris thought it would be cute to take a picture of me licking ice cream off my hand before Maggie figured out Mommy and Daddy got ice cream without her!
